Central Japan city becomes country’s first to record 40 C day in September

TOKYO — The temperature soared to 40 degrees Celsius in the city of Sanjo in central Japan’s Niigata Prefecture on Sept 3, marking the first time the mercury has reached that level in September, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The sizzling temperature was recorded shortly before 1 p.m. on Sept 3, the agency said.
Other locations on the Sea of Japan side of the country registered punishing temperatures of over 39 C, including the Niigata Prefecture city of Tainai and the city of Tsuruoka in neighboring Yamagata Prefecture. The temperatures were the highest the cities have ever seen in September.
As of midday on Sept. 3, 72 locations in the country had posted temperatures of 35 C or more.
